Petro Poroshenko told what he talked about with European Commissioner Marta Kos

Petro Poroshenko said that Ukraine risks falling behind Moldova on the path to membership in the European Union if it does not accelerate reforms and the adoption of necessary laws.

He said this on the “Pryamiy” TV channel, commenting on a meeting with European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos.

According to Poroshenko, the risk that Ukraine and Moldova may be considered separately in the EU accession process does indeed exist.

“Is there a risk that we will be separated from Moldova? Obviously, there is. But not because they love Moldova more. They have already done a significant part of what we should do,” the leader of European Solidarity noted.

He emphasized that in order to advance towards the European Union, it is necessary to accelerate the Verkhovna Rada’s work on European integration legislation.

Poroshenko also reported that during the meeting with Marta Kos, the parties discussed a package of draft laws that Ukraine should adopt in the near future. Among them are the reform of the State Bureau of Investigation, the update of the financial monitoring system, as well as the issue of the rule of law and the independence of the judicial system.

Separately, the politician recalled the European Commission’s decision on a 90 billion euro support package for Ukraine, which is secured by frozen Russian assets.

According to Poroshenko, Ukraine should soon open the first negotiation cluster “Fundamentals”, which concerns the rule of law.

“If we do not move forward, and Moldova does, then the citizens of Moldova should not suffer due to the inaction of the Ukrainian authorities. Then Moldova will move forward, and Ukraine risks being left behind,” Poroshenko warned.

He also emphasized that accession to the EU depends not only on the work of the authorities, but also on the joint efforts of the parliament, local government, civil society, and the expert community.

“Without unifying the country, we will not defeat Russia and will not join the European Union,” the fifth President concluded.
