Played a key role in the offensive on Kurshchyna: what is known about the murdered SBU colonel Voronych

Ivan Voronych, a SBU colonel who was shot dead on July 10 in Kyiv, played a key role in the capture of parts of the Kursk region by Ukrainian troops in August 2024.

This was reported by the New York Times.

It is noted that Voronych began his career in the SBU in the mid-1990s. At that time, he commanded a special operations unit known as the “Fifth Directorate,” which received technical support from the CIA.

In particular, this unit was responsible for a high-ranking Russian separatist commander under the pseudonym “Motorola” — Arsen Pavlov.

According to former head of the Security Service Ivan Bakanov, Voronych has been involved in countering Russian aggression since 2014.

During the full-scale invasion, Ivan Voronych became part of the unit responsible for operations in the “gray zone.” In addition, his unit was responsible for the offensive into Kursk, as a result of which Ukrainian troops managed to capture part of the region and control it for eight months.

“If the motive is a murder on the grounds of everyday life, that’s one thing. But it could be a public execution carried out by Russians, which is completely different and will require a set of immediate measures from the SBU,” Bakanov emphasized.

We will remind you that on Wednesday, July 10, in Kyiv, Colonel of the Security Service of Ukraine Ivan Voronych was killed . The attacker shot the man several times at close range.
