US President Donald Trump has revealed new details about the incident on board a Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv. He said that Israeli plumber Yaniv Hayun, who had never flown an aircraft before, helped save the plane from a crash. At the same time, Trump warned that he did not know if all the details of this story were true.
Trump told reporters at the White House after a conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
According to the American president, during the flight, the co-pilot attacked the captain with a knife. The wounded commander was able to open the cabin door, after which passengers rushed inside and began to restrain the attacker.
Hayun told Netanyahu that he entered the cockpit with another passenger. There, he saw the wounded pilot by the door and the attacker at the controls.
“When I went in, I saw a terrorist at the controls, between two seats. There were no pilots in the seats,” said Khayun. He said he grabbed the attacker, held him down, and pulled him out of the cockpit.
After that, the plane began to lose altitude sharply. Khayun returned to the cockpit, grabbed the controls and pulled them towards him to stabilize the plane. The pilots, who were among the passengers, later took control.
“And this plumber, who had never flown a plane, figured out how to pull the controls. And when he was asked why he did that, he said he watched the show ‘Air Crash Investigation.’ He said he watched it all the time and thanks to it, he kind of figured out how to fly a plane!” Trump said.
The American president added that he heard this story from Netanyahu and a few other people: “I don’t know if it’s true, but it’s a story that I heard from Bibi and a few other people.”
The incident occurred on a Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv. The co-pilot, an Omani citizen, stabbed the captain, causing the plane to plummet. Passengers and crew were able to disarm the attacker, and the plane made an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.
The motive for the attack is still being determined. Israeli officials are considering different versions, and Netanyahu said it was too early to draw final conclusions about the motive.
