On Friday, March 13, two Polish MiG-29 fighter jets intercepted a Russian Il-20 aircraft over the waters of the Baltic Sea.
This was reported by the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces on March 16.
According to their data, the Russian plane was performing a reconnaissance mission — the ninth since the beginning of 2026. It was in international airspace without a filed flight plan and with its transponder turned off.
The command emphasized that the plane did not violate Polish airspace. Nevertheless, fighter jets intercepted it, identified it, and escorted it out of the area of responsibility.
“Thanks to the high readiness of the forces on duty, the experience of the pilots, and the effective operation of the air defense system, the task was completed quickly, professionally, and safely,” the message says.
Recall, a week ago, while patrolling the airspace of the Baltic region , Spanish Air Force fighters intercepted two military aircraft belonging to Russia.
By the way, on October 28, Polish fighter jets intercepted a Russian plane that was in the airspace over the Baltic Sea.
