The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs called on Poland to exercise caution following the Sejm’s consideration of a bill that would equate the promotion of OUN and UPA ideology with the promotion of Nazism and communism.

Foreign Ministry press secretary Georgy Tikhiy reported this in a comment to hromadske.

The bill in question is a bill submitted to the Sejm by Polish President Karol Nawrocki on July 3. The document proposes amendments to the Law on the Institute of National Remembrance and the Criminal Code, equating propaganda by the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists and the Ukrainian Insurgent Army with propaganda of Nazi and communist ideologies.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that they are closely monitoring the progress of the bill’s consideration and called on the Polish side to exercise prudence.

“For Ukraine, Poland has been and remains a strategic partner in countering Russian aggression, promoting European integration, economic cooperation, and developing people-to-people ties. We are grateful to Poland and the Polish people for their support since 2022. We are convinced that sensitive historical issues should be resolved through professional dialogue based on mutual respect, rather than being used as political rhetoric,” stated Heorhiy Tykhyi.

The Foreign Ministry also emphasized that Ukraine does not seek to further escalate relations with Poland and expects a similar approach from Warsaw.

“All decisions must be made taking into account the strategic importance of the Ukrainian-Polish partnership, not situational political interests. We warn the Polish side against unilateral escalatory steps,” the Foreign Ministry spokesman added.

As a reminder, Poland has suspended the transfer of MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine , which were planned as part of the agreement to exchange Ukrainian drone technology. These aircraft will now be gradually decommissioned.

It was previously reported that Poland would not support Ukraine’s accession to the European Union unless Kyiv revised its approach to honoring OUN and UPA figures, in particular Stepan Bandera.
