Poland supports the idea of limiting access to temporary protection in the European Union for Ukrainian men of military age. This issue may be discussed by EU ministers in the coming days.

As reported by Polish media, citing diplomatic sources, Warsaw believes that men who, under Ukrainian law, do not have the right to leave the country should not automatically receive temporary protection in the EU.

“In our opinion, it does not cause any controversy that persons who cannot legally leave Ukraine anyway cannot receive temporary protection in the EU,” the Polish diplomat explained.

According to him, this approach corresponds to the position of the Ukrainian authorities, which, due to the war, is facing a shortage of people to staff the army.

At the same time, Poland advocates a gradual abandonment of special privileges for Ukrainian refugees and a transition to general migration rules that apply to citizens of other countries.

At the same time, Warsaw does not support another option for restrictions, which would involve a different approach to Ukrainians depending on the region they live in. The Polish side emphasizes that the entire territory of Ukraine remains under threat of Russian attacks.

“All of Ukraine is the target of missile strikes from Russia,” Polish diplomats note, explaining their position on the rejection of the geographical principle of providing protection.

The issue of possible changes to the rules of temporary protection for Ukrainians in the EU is still under discussion.

As a reminder, EU countries are considering the possibility of excluding Ukrainian men of military age from the extended temporary protection scheme . This is necessary to maintain Ukraine’s military reserve, but the restrictions may only apply to future applicants.
