Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski said that Warsaw supports the initiative to help Ukraine shoot down Russian missiles and drones, but any decision on this should be made at the NATO level.

This is reported by ” News.Live “.

According to the head of the Polish Foreign Ministry, public opinion in Poland clearly supports the idea of closing the skies over Ukraine. Polls show that the majority of Poles support a more active participation of their state in protecting Ukrainian airspace from Russian attacks.

At the same time, Sikorski emphasized, Warsaw cannot make such decisions independently, since it is a member of the North Atlantic Alliance.

“Poland is a member of NATO, and therefore we are forced to wait for a decision from NATO,” the minister noted.

Sikorsky also reported that, against the backdrop of recent Russian provocations in the airspace of Poland, Romania, and Estonia, discussions on the possibility of closing the skies over Ukraine are taking place at an accelerated pace.

He emphasized that the allies are already consulting on possible formats for participation in joint air defense.

The idea of a partial or complete “closing of the skies” over Ukraine has been actively discussed since the beginning of the large-scale Russian invasion. Previously, similar initiatives were put forward by individual European politicians, but NATO traditionally takes a cautious position, wary of direct escalation with Russia.

As is known, in September 2025, there was a sharp increase in the number of incidents involving Russian aircraft and drones in the airspace of NATO member countries . This raised concerns about European security and possible disagreements between allies on the issue of responding to Moscow’s actions.

The day before, it became known that Poland plans to allow its military to shoot down Russian drones in the skies over Ukraine without the approval of the European Union or NATO.
