Poland talks about improving relations with Belarus

Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski, after meeting with his Belarusian counterpart Maksym Ryzhenkov, said there was a chance for a gradual improvement in relations between Warsaw and Minsk. According to him, there had been no contacts at this level between the countries since around 2016.

The meeting took place on September 23 in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
According to Sikorsky, the talks were introductory in nature. The parties discussed the situation on the Polish-Belarusian border and issues of regional security.
Separately, it was mentioned that Russian drones and missiles were flying over the territory of Belarus.
“This is the first, introductory meeting, but there are also meetings with other ministries and at other levels. Soon we will open a new embassy building in Minsk. When a neighbor wants to thaw and improve relations, Poland is always the first to reach an agreement,” Sikorski said.
The Polish Foreign Minister also noted that the situation on the border is now more stable than before.
According to him, this was facilitated by both the strengthening of border infrastructure and Minsk’s latest steps, in particular the release of political prisoners.
Among them, Sikorsky mentioned Andrzej Poczobut, who was released in April 2026 after five years in a Belarusian colony.
The minister emphasized that it is too early to talk about the full normalization of relations, but he views the current contacts as a positive signal.
