Polish President Karol Nawrocki signed an updated law on support for Ukrainian citizens following government amendments that he said make the document more equitable for Poles.
This was reported by Interia Wydarzenia.
A preliminary version of the law, submitted for signature in August, envisaged the possibility of making payments to Ukrainians under the “800+” program—a monthly child benefit of 800 zlotys, similar to the one received by Polish families. Nawrocki vetoed it, deeming such a decision inappropriate.
After revision, the government submitted a new draft, which the president signed. The document extends the legal status of Ukrainian refugees in Poland until March 4, 2026, but tightens the conditions for receiving social benefits.
“I’ve signed the law for the second time because I don’t want to be a president of chaos. But I emphasize – I’m signing this law on aid to Ukrainians for the last time,” the president declared.
At the same time, he stressed that the Ukrainian minority in Poland should receive respect on the same level as all other national minorities in the country.
“We are at a social stage for which we are mature. I hope the government is working on solutions that will ensure our well-being and the comfortable life of Ukrainian citizens in our country… and that we won’t fall into chaos next March,” Navrotsky added.
The updated law regulates the stay of Ukrainian refugees and changes the approach to social assistance, maintaining support but making it more selective and controllable.
