Polish law enforcement officers have initiated criminal proceedings over the damage to the monument and burial site, as well as a possible motive of national hatred.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry called the actions of the Polish politician shameful and immoral.

“We expect the competent Polish authorities to provide a proper legal assessment of these actions, restore the damaged grave, as well as other places of Ukrainian memory in Poland, and prevent similar incidents in the future,” the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said.

The ministry also emphasized the need for a unified approach to protecting memorial sites on both sides of the border. This includes proper protection of Ukrainian memorial sites in Poland and Polish memorial sites in Ukraine.

“No one has the right to turn the memory and respect for the dead into a circus performance to achieve their political goals,” the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry noted.

The monument in Białystok is located at the site of a mass grave of Ukrainians who died in 1946 in battles with the Soviet NKVD. The memorial has been operating since the 1990s, and received its modern appearance with the names of the dead engraved on it in 2019.
