Political scientist Taran criticized Hetmantsev’s statement about being “chosen by God”
Ukrainian political scientist Viktor Taran reacted sharply to the statement of the head of the Verkhovna Rada Tax Committee, Danylo Hetmantsev, about a “divine mission” in politics.
According to him, the rhetoric that a politician is supposedly “chosen by God” and accountable only to him raises serious concerns about the limits of political responsibility.
Taran emphasized that previously Hetmantsev made tough statements about business, in particular about the need to “pinch like geese.” Now, according to the political scientist, such a policy is receiving a new ideological justification.
In his opinion, the transition from political arguments to appeals to a “higher mandate” makes normal public discussion impossible.
“When a politician believes that his rightness has a higher level of agreement, the discussion simply disappears,” Taran notes.
He also warned that similar approaches throughout history have repeatedly led to a sense of exclusivity in power and a blurring of the lines between politics and belief in one’s own infallibility.
The political scientist called for preventing the disappearance of these borders and for critical evaluation of such statements.
