Pope Leo XIV hospitalized: what is known about his condition

Pope Leo XIV arrived at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome on October 13 to undergo lung surgery. During a routine examination, doctors discovered a small mass on the pontiff’s chest, which they now plan to remove.

This was reported by Vatican News with reference to the press service of the Holy See.

The operation will be performed by a team of thoracic surgeons led by Professor Stefano Margaritora.

According to the Vatican, doctors discovered the tumor at a very early stage. It is small and has clear boundaries. However, doctors do not yet know whether it is malignant.

More information about the Pope’s health is expected on the evening of October 13. After the operation, the pontiff will likely spend about a week in the hospital.

Due to his hospitalization, the Vatican canceled all of his audiences until October 20.

Leo XIV himself spoke about the upcoming surgery after Sunday prayers in St. Peter’s Square. After that, the pontiff began to receive well-wishes from church and political leaders from various countries.

On the evening of October 13, a joint prayer for the Pope’s health will be held in the Chapel of St. John Paul II at the Gemelli Hospital. It will be led by Cardinal Baldassare Reina.

Due to hospitalization, the pontiff also missed a meeting at the Vatican dedicated to the tenth anniversary of the document Amoris laetitia. However, he held all scheduled audiences on the morning of October 12.

In addition, on October 14, Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle will preside over the Mass in St. Peter’s Square in place of Leo XIV. During the service, the faithful will pray for the health of the pontiff.
