Poroshenko after intensification of relations with the US: the first realistic step towards ending the war should be a complete ceasefire
Ukraine’s fifth president, Petro Poroshenko, believes that increased diplomatic contacts between Ukraine and the United States open up new opportunities for ending the war. According to him, any peace talks should begin with a complete, unconditional, and comprehensive ceasefire.
This is reported by “European Solidarity”.
Poroshenko noted that President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to Washington, a meeting with US President Donald Trump, as well as a procedural vote in the US Senate on a bill to strengthen sanctions against Russia and Iran provide grounds for cautious optimism.
“This opens up new opportunities and gives reason to hope for increased diplomatic efforts to end the war. There is nothing more important than ending the war right now,” he stressed.
The fifth president also remembered the late US Senator Lindsey Graham, calling him a principled friend of Ukraine who worked for many years to maintain bipartisan support for Kyiv in the US.
According to Poroshenko, the first and only step on the path to peace should be a complete, unconditional, comprehensive, and indefinite ceasefire.
“We should not be distracted by so-called security guarantees or a peace agreement. We need to start with a ceasefire. Only after that can we move on to negotiations on the parameters of a just and lasting peace,” he said.
Poroshenko recalled that this was the approach used during the preparation of the Minsk agreements in 2014-2015. According to him, the cessation of hostilities then gave Ukraine time to strengthen the state and build up the Armed Forces.
At the same time, he stressed that the ceasefire does not mean freezing the conflict. In his opinion, this period should be used to strengthen the army, develop technologies, unmanned systems, attract foreign volunteers, and form reliable security guarantees.
Poroshenko also stated that international partners are interested in ending the war, and the European Solidarity faction is ready to support any decisions of the Ukrainian authorities that will really bring peace closer.
