Poroshenko at NATO headquarters: Armed Forces of Ukraine are the pillar of transatlantic security
Petro Poroshenko, who is participating in a meeting of the Ukraine-NATO Inter-Parliamentary Council in Brussels, emphasized during his speech that the Ukrainian Armed Forces are currently the pillar of transatlantic security.
He thanked NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and all allies for their strong and unwavering support for Ukraine.
“Special thanks for your speech in Davos. First, about ending the crisis in Greenland. And secondly, and perhaps firstly, you said that despite the importance of Greenland, the main focus should be on the Ukrainian issue,” the fifth President recalled.
“By supporting Ukraine, everyone now understands that you are not only helping us, you are investing in your own security, strengthening security, and the defense of Ukraine is the defense of Europe,” Poroshenko said.
“If NATO is a platform for European and transatlantic security, then Ukraine is its pillar. NATO remains the strongest and most reliable security guarantor that exists. I am skeptical that we now have other security guarantees that we have been discussing since 2024. But security guarantees are only a transitional period to Ukraine’s full membership,” Petro Poroshenko noted.
“We do not agree and do not accept that Russia will have the right to veto Ukraine’s future membership in NATO. Only Ukraine and member states, with the strong support of the NATO Secretary General.
“In this situation, I think that Ukraine can be the largest, most professional, most reliable European armed forces, and this is a truth that every European nation will ultimately support,” Petro Poroshenko is convinced.
“But NATO is not only about security. NATO is also about freedom and democracy. And democracy and freedom do not exist by default, they must be protected, strengthened, and renewed through shared responsibility. That is why we must insist on free and fair elections after a peace agreement, not during war. We need to support reforms, including anti-corruption reform, we need to protect the rights of the opposition. And this is my firm belief,” said Petro Poroshenko.
