Poroshenko at the Visby security conference: Putin perceives concessions as weakness
Petro Poroshenko, who is participating in the annual security conference in Visby, Sweden, once again explained to his European partners during his speech that Putin does not plan to stop at Ukraine. He emphasized that the aggressor can be stopped thanks to a combination of three mandatory components: the resilience of the Ukrainian people, the capabilities of the Armed Forces, and the support of allies. Supporting Ukraine’s resistance is an investment in Europe’s security, Poroshenko noted.
This was reported by the press service of “European Solidarity” .
“You must understand that this is an investment in your own security, because you are not ready for a Russian war. You have nothing to protect yourself with, you have no air defense. Your anti-ballistic defense is simply insufficient and ineffective. And the only way we can do this: joint investments in our security,” Poroshenko said.
He noted that Russia has changed its strategy because it cannot get any results on the battlefield, any significant results. Putin promised to capture Donbas in February 2026, not to mention previous promises. Then in June, then in August, then in October. The Ukrainian military is stopping them and effectively repelling them.
“Can you imagine that every day Russia loses from 1,400 to 1,900 people a day, wounded and killed? No one understands why Russia gives these lives. But they changed tactics and opened a rear front, destroying Ukrainian cities. This is genocide, and this is what Putin is doing not to my country, but to Europe,” Poroshenko believes.
The fifth president added that the war must be stopped.
“Stop thinking about a peace agreement. It’s impossible with Putin. He uses peace talks only to keep the war going. That’s his only goal. There should be only one single message for Putin: an immediate, unconditional, comprehensive ceasefire. Russia buys weapons three to four times cheaper than Europeans. Please don’t compare military spending. Don’t look at supporting Ukraine as charity. This is an investment in your security. Russia, which is testing Ukraine today, will definitely threaten Europe tomorrow,” Poroshenko is convinced.
He noted that keeping Ukrainian business alive today means creating opportunities for European business tomorrow.
“We urgently need a mechanism to insure war risks for the Ukrainian economy, using frozen Russian assets for this. This is an absolutely necessary and immediate step that should be taken. We need to create a logistics hub on the border of Ukraine and the European Union member states to counter the Russian logistical attack. With Poland, Romania, Hungary, with Slovakia. This solves not only the problem of Ukraine and European Union aid – it solves the problem of famine in the Middle East and North Africa,” the fifth President explained.
Poroshenko emphasized that financing Ukraine also means definancing Russia, its weakening.
“I was definitely disappointed by yesterday’s statement by the United States regarding diesel fuel. But believe me, this has no impact on the price of diesel in the world. Do you know how many millions of tons of diesel fuel the world consumes every day? 4 million. And if we talk about 300,000 per month, it’s zero, it’s just a symbolic message from those who want to destroy our unity,” Poroshenko believes.
At the same time, he noted that regarding sanctions policy, the message to our American partners is the same as in previous years.
“Please do not believe Putin. Putin perceives this not as goodwill that you give him, but as weakness. And this cannot lead to any results. Second: do not be afraid of Putin. And third: maintain unity, because only by uniting can we achieve results. Russia is weakening on the front line. We must find effective steps for the rear, we must maintain unity, including our future membership in the European Union, including stimulating reforms. Financing Ukraine is undoubtedly the cheapest form of long-term security in Europe,” Poroshenko concluded.
