Petro Poroshenko, in an interview with the famous Czech journalist and writer Ondřej Kundra, said that events in Venezuela could significantly reduce Russian revenues for the continuation of the war in Ukraine.

“Ukraine has never recognized the results of the 2024 presidential elections in Venezuela, which were rigged. We have experience and two revolutions associated with rigging of election results, including the Orange Revolution. Of course, the Russian Federation began to refer to international law, stating that this was an act of terrorism. This is cynical. It is Russia that is destroying international law and global security. One of the permanent members of the UN Security Council is an aggressor and must pay the price for it,” Poroshenko recalled.

“This could have a big impact on the further course of the war. When you ask me about the impact of the turbulent events in Venezuela on Ukraine, I see positive consequences. Venezuela and its oil industry have so far supported Russia and other terrorist regimes. President Maduro has supplied the oil company Rosneft and its head Sechin with significant amounts of oil, these were corrupt deals. Venezuelan oil belongs to the Venezuelan people and to American companies that invest in its refining. In return, it was Russia that received the money, oil and influence. This is no longer the case: American intervention in Venezuela has interrupted these flows. The same applies to Cuba.

As we speak, US forces have also stopped two Russian tankers from the so-called “shadow fleet” at sea, which were heading to Cuba with Venezuelan oil. This could definitely change the situation on the market for this raw material. Russia will have less of it, it will have less income from its sale. Now we are seeing a drop in the price of Russian oil. And less oil money means that Putin will not have enough money to finance the war. This could bring us closer to peace,” the fifth President explains.

Regarding Maduro’s future, Poroshenko noted that he will have the opportunity to defend himself in court.

“Maduro will have the opportunity to defend himself in an independent court in a democratic country. He will be able to present his position on charges of drug trafficking, terrorism, extrajudicial killings – and all the world’s media will see it. What is important is that the court is independent, open and transparent, and I have no reason to doubt that it will be so,” said Petro Poroshenko.
