Poroshenko explained what security guarantees for Ukraine should be at the extraordinary EPP summit

Petro Poroshenko, at the invitation of the President of the European People’s Party Manfred Weber, took part in an extraordinary informal summit of the EPP via videoconference.

“Our political family not only closely follows the events around the peaceful settlement in Ukraine, but is also actively involved in finding ways to end the war. I thanked the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen for her proactive position, strategic vision and firmness in promoting common interests. The key principles that unite us and remain fundamental are “nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine” and “nothing about Europe without Europe,” the party leader wrote on social media.

In his speech, he emphasized that Putin’s strategic goal remains unchanged: the occupation of all of Ukraine and the liquidation of our statehood.

“The key task is to provide Ukraine with effective and legally binding security guarantees, backed by the support of European countries, the United States and other allies. Such guarantees should mean our independence and sovereignty, the impossibility of new Russian aggression, strong and well-equipped armed forces, the development of the Ukrainian language, the protection of our faith and identity, as well as the irreversibility of our European and Euro-Atlantic course,” Poroshenko said.

“I emphasized separately that Ukraine’s security is not only an external but also an internal dimension. This is the maturity and sustainability of democracy, respect for human rights and the rule of law. Putin also began aggression in order to destroy the freedom of our state. Therefore, internal unity and democratic resilience strengthen our security, the trust of partners and negotiating positions. We must strengthen multi-party system, freedom of media, independent anti-corruption institutions and a competitive economic environment. This is our strength and what makes us an integral part of the European family,” the Fifth President believes.

The European People’s Party is the largest political group in the European Union, comprising 82 parties and partners from 43 countries, the President of the European Commission, the President of the European Parliament, 20 EU and non-EU Heads of State and Government, 9 Members of the European Commission and the largest group in the European Parliament.

The European Solidarity Party officially joined the European People’s Party in 2019, and on 10 March 2023, European Solidarity received the status of associate member of the European People’s Party.
