The fifth president and current People’s Deputy Petro Poroshenko, who is participating in the Munich Security Conference, told reporters in an interview that the future of not only Ukraine, but also Europe and global security in general is being decided now.
“I consider it a big mistake to think that here, in Munich, we are discussing “military assistance to Ukraine”. I consider it a big mistake to use the very term “assistance”. This is not assistance to Ukraine, this is not charity. Here we are discussing security on the continent. We are discussing how Poland, the Baltic countries, Germany, France can survive”, – Poroshenko believes.
He warned the West against the illusion of appeasing Russian dictator Putin. “This is impossible. I know this for sure, because I have five years of experience in negotiations with Putin. A great success was simply stopping the war by signing a ceasefire agreement, understanding that there can be no ‘peace agreement’ with Putin, because this is impossible,” Poroshenko stressed.
According to him, the only way to stop the war is to have “boots on the ground” on Ukrainian territory. Poroshenko explained that “it is cheaper and more reliable to have NATO troops on Ukrainian soil than NATO troops in Poland.”
He also stressed the importance of preserving transatlantic unity. “If we are divided, we will lose. “We” are NATO, Ukraine, the United States. And then Putin will win. But when we are united, Putin simply has no chance. Neither with the export of Russian oil or gas, nor with the purchase of components for Russian weapons. We can do it,” the fifth President stated.
Poroshenko recalled that last year in Munich there was a major dispute between the US and Europe, which makes both sides weaker.
“Unfortunately, this makes Ukraine weaker and makes Russia, Iran and North Korea stronger. We cannot allow this to happen any longer. And that is why today here in Munich, there is a great responsibility — to work hard for this unity,” he added.
The MP noted that Ukraine is currently performing a very important part of the work for Europe. He called on partners “not to close NATO’s doors to Ukraine,” as its accession would also be beneficial for the Alliance.
“The question is very simple. If you want to stop the war, there must be security guarantees. If you want real security guarantees, not the “Budapest Memorandum,” you need troops on the ground. Otherwise, it will not be a security agreement, but an agreement on military assistance or financial assistance. This is definitely not enough, because it does not stop the war. It is impossible to stop the war simply with money or simply with weapons. It is possible to stop the war using the mechanism of NATO’s Article 5. And without troops on the ground. Day after day, month after month, more and more people understand this, including in the United States. They will not be able to avoid the presence of troops on Ukrainian territory if they want to stop the war,” Petro Poroshenko is convinced.
