Petro Poroshenko, during a speech in the Verkhovna Rada, called for returning UAH 40 billion to the Defense Ministry budget, and not directing it to cashback and other, in his words, non-targeted expenses. He emphasized the need to join efforts to achieve a ceasefire.
This was reported by the press service of European Solidarity.
“There are only two plenary weeks left before the summer recess of the Verkhovna Rada. We must answer, first of all, three questions: what else can we do to strengthen the combat capability of the Armed Forces of Ukraine; how to accelerate the adoption of European integration legislation, since the entire state has undertaken the relevant obligations; and how to ensure the real implementation of the Constitution, and not just its formal citation,” Poroshenko noted.
He also positively assessed the president’s recent speech, stating that he was glad to hear the emphasis on the army, language, faith, and European integration. He separately noted that the head of state’s speech began with words about unity.
According to Poroshenko, the idea of creating a national unity coalition in the Verkhovna Rada has the support of about 60% of Ukrainians. He emphasized that in the absence of a single majority, it is necessary to form a national unity government and make decisions that meet current challenges.
Poroshenko said that Ukraine supports readiness for a comprehensive ceasefire, but should not allow Russia to delay negotiations on security guarantees and a peace agreement.
He stressed the need for an immediate and unconditional cessation of hostilities, noting that the Armed Forces of Ukraine play a key role in this process as the “most effective diplomat” who forces Russia to act in an understandable language.
The opposition leader also stated that European Solidarity demands the return of UAH 40 billion for the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to purchase weapons, instead of using them from the Reserve Fund for other programs.
“Today at 3 p.m. there will be another test – a session of the Supreme Court on the abolition of unconstitutional and illegal sanctions against the opposition leader. We demand that the independence of the judiciary be protected. And now we must not write a new Constitution, but adhere to the current one,” Poroshenko emphasized.
