Poroshenko on the anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster: Russia continues its nuclear blackmail

On the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster, Petro Poroshenko shared unique footage from the nuclear power plant immediately after its liberation from Russian occupiers in the spring of 2022.

Then the fifth President’s team brought humanitarian aid to the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant workers, who demonstrated the terrible consequences of Russians’ presence at the nuclear facility.

“We thought Chernobyl was a tragedy that would never happen again. Until February 24, 2022. Then, without hesitation, the aggressor country seized the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, taking the workers and National Guard into its occupied territory. From February 24 to March 31, they attempted to seize control of the plant, threatening Ukraine and the world with a nuclear disaster. Without adequate food or medical care, the plant’s workers maintained control of the power units while Russian troops stole and plundered everything around them. The barbarians destroyed the monitoring systems, causing the spread of radiation from the surrounding forests,” Poroshenko recalls.

“Poverty, looting, and irresponsibility—that’s the legacy the Russians left behind. This is what Marina and I saw when we arrived at the plant at the first opportunity with humanitarian aid. Food, medicine, household items—everything was needed. We were shocked by the madness the occupiers committed there. Only the courage of the plant workers who defended the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant saved the world from disaster,” the fifth President is convinced.

“Every day, Russian missiles fly over nuclear reactors, aiming to cause as many civilian casualties as possible. This is what we are forced to combat now,” Poroshenko noted.

“Today we remember all those who are no longer with us, because they paid the ultimate price for eliminating the consequences of the disaster. We bow low and express our gratitude to the courageous people who averted and are still averting disaster from the world,” writes Petro Poroshenko.
