Poroshenko on the prospects for peace: diplomacy only works when there is strength behind it

The first task of negotiations to end Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine should be a ceasefire, Petro Poroshenko said during a speech at the congress of Lithuania’s largest party, the Fatherland Union – Lithuanian Christian Democrats, in Vilnius.

This was reported by the press service of “European Solidarity” .

“I have always believed in diplomacy, but diplomacy only works when there is strength behind it. Today, the first practical task must be a complete, comprehensive, unconditional ceasefire. Very simple: on land, at sea, and above all in the air,” Poroshenko said.

He emphasized that at present everyone is striving for a just and reliable peace.

“A just peace. But a final political settlement may require years of negotiations. And Ukrainians should not die every day simply because diplomats need time to agree on final documents,” the fifth President believes.

Poroshenko added that a ceasefire should be the first step.

“A ceasefire should be the beginning, not the end. And after that, we need a strong Ukrainian army, a powerful defense industry, sufficient air defense, real security guarantees, continued sanctions, Ukraine’s membership in the EU, and the unchanging prospect of joining NATO. Peace is not just the moment when Russia stops shooting. Peace is when Russia understands that the next attack will cost more than it is able to pay,” he emphasized.

The fifth president noted that Ukraine needs powerful defense forces, strong air defense, a strong Ukrainian economy, and effective democratic institutions.

“We need a strong Europe and a strong Lithuania. A powerful transatlantic unity. These are not separate tasks – this is a single common strategy: a strategy of victory for Ukraine, a strategy of victory for Europe, a strategy of victory for Lithuania. This is a strategy of security for Europe, a strategy of peace, under which Russia will no longer be able to destroy Europe. Lithuania and Ukraine have repeatedly proven that together we are much stronger. Now is the time to transform our unity into new joint solutions, new opportunities and a new European force,” Petro Poroshenko concluded.

By the way, during a speech at the congress of Lithuania’s largest party, the Fatherland Union – Lithuanian Christian Democrats, in Vilnius, Petro Poroshenko stated that Ukraine has entered a new phase of the war , when the aggressor is trying to destroy the economy and civilian life in the rear, primarily in the capital.
