Poroshenko outlined the possible stages of the peace process: either a ceasefire, or a long-range response from Ukraine.

In an interview with the Lithuanian publication BNS, Petro Poroshenko spoke about what a peace process could look like.

“Let’s talk about two stages of the peace process. The first stage is a ceasefire. The ceasefire must be comprehensive, visible, and immediately implemented. This is Putin’s style: constant procrastination, an attempt to exhaust and delay a solution. We will not allow this. The demand must be simple: we are talking only about a ceasefire, and it must be unconditional and immediate,” Poroshenko notes.

“If he continues to kill Ukrainians, the consequences will be serious. There will be an ‘if’ plan. If he wants to avoid tragic consequences, he must realize that Ukraine can effectively launch long-range missile and drone strikes and attack Russian oil infrastructure. More than 20 percent of Russia’s oil refining capacity has already been damaged, and this is only the beginning. We will continue our attacks on gas, oil, energy, and other infrastructure. If anyone thinks time is playing exclusively in Russia’s favor, they are mistaken: Russia is running out of military resources and money; with the help of Europe and the United States, we are pushing the Russian economy toward collapse, and Putin will pay for it,” the fifth president believes. Poroshenko also noted that Trump’s signal about the possibility of transferring Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine is one of the tools he uses to pressure Putin to agree to a ceasefire.

“Therefore, I hope Putin will be motivated to agree to a ceasefire. A ceasefire would be the first step toward victory for us,” Poroshenko said.

“The second stage is that after the ceasefire, we will begin discussing a broader peace agreement. But under no circumstances will we sell territory. That’s a red line, it’s unacceptable, and there’s no room for compromise,” Poroshenko said.

The results of the Trump-Zelensky meeting were previously reported. The leaders discussed security guarantees for Ukraine, arms supplies, including Tomahawk missiles, and prospects for ending the war.

As a reminder, Trump previously avoided a direct answer to the question of whether Ukraine should cede territory to achieve peace with Russia.
