Poroshenko: Trump has tools to pressure Putin to end the war
In an interview with the Lithuanian publication BNS , Petro Poroshenko stated that the US president has trump cards that he can use to force Putin to stop the war.
The fifth President noted that following the success of the peace process in Gaza, the American leader is determined to make progress in the war in Ukraine.
“What does Putin want? Putin is trying to show off his international victory, but that’s impossible. He wants to distance the US from the Ukrainian issue, so that America becomes inactive in this process,” Poroshenko explains.
“There’s no country in the world that wants peace more than Ukraine—because we’re paying the highest price for it. Dozens of innocent civilians and soldiers are dying every day. Therefore, we want peace, but not just any peace. We need a just peace. We will not capitulate. Putin’s plan to destroy our Armed Forces in Donbas is just empty talk, and we won’t allow him to implement it,” Poroshenko emphasizes.
“Trump has so-called ‘trump cards’ that he can use to pressure Putin. What are they? First, Tomahawk missiles, which the US could transfer to Ukraine. Second, a new wave of US air defense systems. Third, new F-16 fighter jets. Another is financial aid. And yet another ‘trump card’ is sanctions. All these tools are ways to pressure Putin to stop the war. I am confident that Trump will take advantage of these opportunities. He understands that Putin has no choice but to stop the war,” said Petro Poroshenko.
“The situation remains very difficult. The intensity of airstrikes, missile strikes, and drone attacks is increasing, especially against energy infrastructure. Part of Ukraine’s population is left without electricity and water. However, we are fighting with all our might, and we are supported by our partners – the US and NATO,” Poroshenko said.
“I think even Trump’s announcement that he’s ready to provide Tomahawks is a very positive sign. He hadn’t promised that before. The Tomahawks aren’t just weapons for Ukraine, but also a means of pressuring Putin: if Putin refuses to agree to a ceasefire, the US could increase military aid and impose additional sanctions on countries buying oil from Russia,” Poroshenko said.
“This is Putin’s clear message. I call it ‘Plan B’ or ‘Plan IF.’ The idea is simple: If the war doesn’t stop, the US will provide Ukraine with money, weapons, and strengthen sanctions and political support. In this case, ‘Plan IF’ will be an effective tool for pressuring Russia,” Poroshenko said.
