Power outage schedules may return to Ukraine: when and why will power supply be limited

Ukraine may see a return to power outages in the summer due to heat, repairs at nuclear power plants, and possible capacity shortages. In the event of new massive attacks by the Russian Federation, the number of outages could increase to 4 at a time.
This is reported by “Focus” .
According to Roman Nitsovich, Research Director of DiXi Group, one of the main risks for the energy system in the summer will be prolonged heat, during which the temperature may exceed +35 degrees for 6-9 days.
“We are talking about the maximum temperature. Under such a scenario, of course, our consumption increases. It is actually almost the same as in winter, when peak consumption is over 16 GW,” said Nitsovich.
The expert noted that even without new large-scale attacks during peak hours, the power system could experience a deficit of more than 2 GW.
“Of course, the question here is the possibility of attracting imports during peak hours, since consumption in neighboring countries will also grow. And it is not a fact that Ukraine will attract the entire volume of imports during this peak period,” he explained.
According to Nicovich, in the event of an electricity shortage, it will have to be covered by limiting consumption and returning to blackout schedules.
“In the event that abnormal heat is accompanied by intense attacks, the deficit will grow. And at such moments, the number of outage queues will increase up to 4 at the same time,” the expert emphasized.
He also reported that in the summer, part of the nuclear generation will be undergoing scheduled repairs or fuel reloading, which will result in less available capacity in the system.
Separately, the expert drew attention to the risks to equipment and power grids during heat waves.
“Heat is a rather stressful period for the power system. It affects not only consumption, but also the stability of the equipment, which also overheats,” Roman Nitsovych noted.
According to him, frontline and border regions remain the most vulnerable to possible outages due to damage to networks.
The expert added that they also plan to balance the energy system using energy storage facilities, pumped storage plants, and gas pickers.
“It’s difficult to advise turning off air conditioners, because for some it’s not just a matter of comfort, but also health,” Nitsovich concluded.
