Power outages are returning to Ukraine: in which regions are schedules being introduced?

In Ukraine, due to abnormal heat and increased load on the power system, hourly power outage schedules are being introduced in a number of regions. In particular, restrictions have been announced in Ivano-Frankivsk, Zaporizhia, and Cherkasy regions.

YASNO CEO Serhiy Kovalenko reported that Ukraine, like most European countries, has entered a period of abnormal heat, which leads to a sharp increase in electricity consumption and additional load on the power system.

According to him, in Kyiv, every 3-degree increase in temperature adds about 100 MW of load. This includes not only household air conditioners, but also cooling systems in offices, shopping centers, stores, and enterprises.

“The heat is also a serious test for equipment that has been operating in war conditions for over 4 years and has survived numerous attacks,” said Serhiy Kovalenko.

He noted that after the winter shelling, energy workers managed to stabilize the system, but the repair and restoration season is currently underway, so part of the infrastructure is under repair, and the rest is operating at capacity.

“In the coming days, the power system will operate in a very tense mode. I hope we will be able to get through this period without significant restrictions. But we should be prepared for different scenarios,” added Serhiy Kovalenko.

At the same time, JSC “Prykarpattyaoblenergo” reported that on June 30, hourly power outage schedules will be in effect in the Ivano-Frankivsk region. The company noted that changes are possible during the day, and the restrictions were introduced due to the critical situation in the energy system of Ukraine, which arose as a result of Russian missile strikes on energy infrastructure.

According to the report of JSC “Zaporizhzhiaoblenergo”, in accordance with the instructions of NPC “Ukrenergo”, on June 30 from 16:00 to 22:00 in Zaporizhzhia region, hourly outage schedules for the population in one turn may be applied. Also, during this period, full capacity limitation schedules are expected to be applied for industry and business.

JSC “Cherkasioblenergo” also reported that on the command of NPC “Ukrenergo” on June 30 from 16:00 to 22:00, hourly outage schedules in one turn may be applied for all categories of consumers in Cherkasy region. In addition, for industry and business, full capacity limitation schedules may be introduced at this time.

Energy experts emphasize that the situation in the power system may change, so the predicted volumes of restrictions may be adjusted.

It was previously reported that the country could face power outages of up to five hours in the event of new massive Russian strikes on the energy sector. At the same time, without large-scale attacks, the energy system should go through the summer period without significant restrictions for consumers.
