A powerful 6.0-magnitude earthquake has struck Afghanistan, killing more than 800 people and injuring thousands. The destruction of entire villages, blocked roads and massive rescue operations have turned the tragedy into one of the largest humanitarian disasters in the region.
This is reported by Reuters .
It is noted that the natural disaster occurred in Afghanistan on August 31. The devastating earthquake had a magnitude of 6.0, the epicenter of which was located near Jalalabad, the fifth largest city in the country.
According to official data from the Ministry of Health, the death toll has already exceeded 800 people, and about 2,800 more people were injured to varying degrees of severity.
The worst-hit province was Kunar, where local authorities said at least three villages had been completely destroyed and dozens of other settlements were severely damaged. Landslides and road blockages have made rescue operations difficult in mountainous areas, with most evacuations being carried out by helicopter.
The UN said its humanitarian teams were already on the ground providing emergency aid to the victims. The World Health Organization has also sent medical staff to field hospitals and mobile aid stations to support local doctors in treating the large number of wounded.
According to the WHO, the greatest need now is to provide the victims with medicines, dressings, drinking water and shelters for those who have lost their homes. Many hospitals are experiencing a shortage of donated blood, so volunteers are flocking to medical facilities.
This is not the first time that Afghanistan has been hit by powerful earthquakes in recent years, but this disaster is one of the deadliest. International organizations are calling on the world community to urgently help the country, which is experiencing a massive humanitarian crisis.
Recall that on April 23 , a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 occurred in the Silivri district near the Sea of Marmara . The tremors, lasting up to 10 seconds, shook Istanbul and were felt in dozens of districts of the city, causing panic among the population.
Earlier it was reported that a powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.7 occurred in Myanmar , causing significant loss of life and destruction. The death toll exceeded 2,000 people, more than 3,900 people were injured, and about 270 are missing.
