Powerful earthquakes in Venezuela: destroyed buildings, dozens of victims and hundreds injured
Two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela on June 24, causing widespread destruction in Caracas and surrounding areas. The quakes killed at least 32 people and injured about 700 others.
This was reported by Reuters, citing local authorities and the US Geological Survey.
The first earthquake, measuring 7.2, struck about 160 kilometers west of Caracas. Less than a minute later, another powerful aftershock, measuring 7.5, was recorded.
Dozens of buildings collapsed in the earthquakes, turning them into piles of concrete and metal. Rescuers are working at the scene of the destruction and continuing to search for people who may be trapped under the rubble.
“Dozens of buildings have collapsed and we are currently carrying out very intensive rescue operations to save as many lives as possible,” said Venezuela’s interim president, Delcy Rodriguez.

The worst damage was recorded in the country’s capital. Eyewitnesses said that after the tremors, people left their homes in panic, and some areas were left with damaged infrastructure.

“When we went down, it was like a horror movie,” said Caracas resident Maria Alejandra.
The airport in Maiquetia, which serves Caracas, was also temporarily closed due to damage. Hospitals were put on high alert and authorities were assessing the damage.

The US Geological Survey warned that the death toll could rise as rescue operations continue. Emergency services remain on the scene.
