The forecast of the Space Weather Prediction Center of the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration indicates that the Earth will be covered by a series of magnetic storms from November 24 to 30. The most intense disturbances are expected in the middle of the week and can affect both the well-being of people and the operation of equipment.

This was reported by the Space Weather Forecasting Center.

Increased geomagnetic activity is forecast for the end of November, lasting almost the entire week. According to experts, magnetic storms can affect both the human body and electronic systems, especially during prolonged disturbances.

Forecast by days:

  • November 24 (Monday) – moderate activity is expected, Kp index 4.
  • November 25 (Tuesday) — a G1 level magnetic storm with a Kp index of 5–6 is forecast.
  • November 26 (Wednesday) — level G1, Kp index 5–6.
  • November 27 (Thursday) — G1 level storm, Kp 5–6.
  • November 28 (Friday) — activity decreased to Kp 3–4.
  • November 29 (Saturday) — a new increase to Kp 4 is possible.
  • November 30 (Sunday) — moderate disturbances or stabilization of the magnetosphere.

It is worth adding that the Kp index is a scale that shows the level of disturbance in the Earth’s magnetic field:

  • Kp 0–2 — calm geomagnetic conditions.
  • Kp 3 — weak perturbations.
  • Kp 4 — moderate activity, possible discomfort for weather-dependent people.
  • Kp 5–6 (G1 level storm) — magnetic storm: affects technology and the well-being of most people.
  • Kp 7 and above are severe and very severe storms that can cause power outages.

Consequences of magnetic storms

Magnetic storms can cause people to:

  • headache, migraine, dizziness;
  • blood pressure drops, rapid heartbeat;
  • fatigue, drowsiness, increased irritability;
  • decreased concentration, deterioration of cognitive functions;
  • exacerbation of chronic diseases (cardiovascular, endocrine, neurological);
  • increased meteosensitivity in the elderly and those with serious diagnoses.

Risk groups:

  • people with hypertension;
  • patients with chronic heart and vascular diseases;
  • weather-dependent people;
  • pregnant;
  • people with sleep disorders and anxiety disorders.

Magnetic storms can lead to:

  • failures in navigation systems, GPS and satellite communications;
  • interference in long-wave radio communications;
  • incorrect operation of satellites and increased risk of their damage;
  • voltage fluctuations in high-voltage lines and power systems;
  • deterioration of the operation of compasses and navigational instruments;
  • increased auroras at high latitudes.

How to protect yourself from magnetic storms?

To protect yourself from the effects of magnetic storms, experts advise:

  • get enough sleep and stick to a daily routine;
  • drink enough water, avoid alcohol and excess caffeine;
  • reduce physical and emotional stress on days of strong storms;
  • regularly ventilate the room, walk more;
  • have medications prescribed by a doctor in advance if you have chronic illnesses;
  • avoid prolonged exposure to screens and eye strain;
  • control blood pressure;
  • monitor forecasts and warnings from space weather services.

For the technique it is recommended:

  • use voltage stabilizers;
  • avoid critical updates or system adjustments on stormy days;
  • provide backup power for important equipment;
  • monitor the status of satellite communications and network equipment.
