Powerlessness at the front: why Putin turned to open terror

The Russian leadership has begun a new phase of intimidation, openly threatening to destroy Ukrainian megacities. Such aggressive rhetoric demonstrates the enemy’s powerlessness to change the situation on the battlefield and is an attempt to put pressure on the psychological state of citizens and Western allies.
International political scientist Stanislav Zhelikhovsky spoke about this on the air of “Pryamoy”.
“Now Russia is actually openly threatening with terror. Previously, they tried to at least somewhat veil all this, but now we see that they are really talking about the destruction of an entire city, a large city of a million people,” the expert noted.
He explained that Moscow is extremely nervous about the stability of European support, in particular the decision to provide a loan of 90 billion euros for 2026-2027. This financial instrument guarantees that Ukraine will function and continue to resist aggression for a long time.
Unable to seize the initiative militarily, the occupiers resort to blackmail and hybrid attacks, trying to force Kyiv’s partners to back down from their intentions, – Stanislav Zhelikhovsky summed up.
Recall that Russia is threatening systematic strikes on Kyiv after a three-day “truce” on Victory Day, trying to demonstrate strength after reputational losses due to the need for a ceasefire.
Russia is also planning missile and drone attacks in advance and is urging foreign diplomats, citizens, and international organizations to evacuate Kyiv. At the same time, the Russian side is urging residents of the capital to avoid areas with military and government infrastructure.
At the same time, the Russian Foreign Ministry stated that the Russian army is allegedly launching “successive systematic strikes” on enterprises of the Ukrainian military-industrial complex in Kyiv and “decision-making centers.”
