Preparations for Russian sabotage exposed in Romania: Russian citizen detained

The Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI), together with the Directorate for the Investigation of Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT), prevented a sabotage that, according to investigators, was being prepared by a 40-year-old Russian citizen living in Romania.

This is reported by Romania Journal.

It is known that the man was detained.

The operation was carried out with the participation of the Romanian police, the General Directorate of Defense Intelligence (DGIA), and foreign partner intelligence services.

According to SRI, the suspect had been under surveillance as part of an investigation into possible acts of sabotage since February 2026. Between February and July, under the supervision of a supervisor, he collected military information and monitored strategic targets via encrypted messengers.

The man photographed and filmed military bases of Romania and allied countries, communication centers, defense institutions, and critical infrastructure. He also recorded the movements of military equipment and personnel in Bucharest and the counties of Cluj, Constanta, Călărași, and Ilfov.

The suspect also documented strategic military facilities, including Ukrainian Antonov cargo planes, while they were in Romania. The SRI said that such activities were consistent with the schemes of sabotage networks that the service said were coordinated by Russia in other European countries.

Romanian intelligence noted that the joint operation prevented sabotage before it was carried out.

DIICOT prosecutors have filed a request with the Bucharest Court of Appeal to arrest the suspect for 30 days on charges of attempted sabotage.

It was previously reported that Moldovan special services are increasingly detecting attempts to recruit citizens of the country to carry out sabotage abroad. Most often, such tasks are directed against Ukraine.
