At a meeting of military leaders chaired by the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, US Deputy Secretary of Defense Elbridge Colby, he informed European allies: US participation in Ukraine’s security guarantees should be limited, and the key role is assigned to Europe.
According to one diplomat at the meeting, “of course, this is a task for Europe; the US is not making any commitments.”
Another Politico interlocutor noted: this US position undermines the previous progress in creating effective security guarantees for Ukraine, achieved over several months of work.
As a reminder, on August 21, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will meet with national security advisors of partner countries to discuss the framework of future security guarantees for Ukraine.
As reported, US President Donald Trump, together with the leaders of European countries, agreed to create a special working group that will prepare a draft of security guarantees for Ukraine. This intergovernmental format will be headed by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
