Pro-Russian conductor Gergiev’s concert cancelled in Italy

The Royal Palace of Caserta in Italy has cancelled a performance scheduled for July 27 by Russian conductor Valery Gergiev, known for his support of the Kremlin.

This was reported by the Italian publication ANSA .

The decision was made after a wave of criticism from the Italian government, Ukrainian authorities and activists.

Gergiev, 72, has publicly supported Putin’s policies, including the annexation of Crimea, and has held patriotic concerts in occupied Palmyra. The Caserta performance could have been his first concert in Europe since the start of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine.

Gergiev had previously been suspended from performing on European stages, including at Milan’s La Scala, for refusing to condemn Russia’s aggression.
