The governing body of the International Criminal Court (ICC) has decided to temporarily suspend Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan pending the conclusion of disciplinary proceedings opened over allegations of sexual harassment.

This is stated in the official ISS document.

It is noted that on the evening of June 8, the court’s executive committee voted to refer Khan’s case to a special session of the ICC’s member states to determine his future fate.

The committee, which consists of 21 member states, concluded by a majority that the allegations were serious enough to warrant further consideration by the court’s member states.

It is known that Khan has repeatedly denied all the allegations that emerged in 2024. They were made by an employee who worked under his supervision at the court’s headquarters in The Hague.

The decision to refer the prosecutor’s case to the 125 ICC member states is unprecedented and could lead to his resignation.

Currently, in accordance with Rule 28 of the Rules of Procedure and Evidence, Karim Khan is temporarily suspended from his duties pending the final decision of the Assembly of States Parties of the ICC as the competent authority authorized to make a final decision in the case.

At the same time, the Court Bureau emphasized that such a suspension does not mean an admission of guilt and does not determine the final outcome of the proceedings.
