Russia is likely preparing a fake special forces operation against Poland’s critical infrastructure in order to later shift responsibility to Ukraine.

This is stated in a report by the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW), which warns of a possible information and sabotage attack by Moscow.

On September 30, the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service issued a statement alleging that Ukraine was preparing an attack on critical Polish targets “under a foreign flag” — in order to then blame Russia and Belarus. The statement mentioned the involvement of Ukrainian military intelligence, Polish special services, as well as units of the “Freedom of Russia” and the Kastus Kalinowski Regiment.

The goal is to create the illusion that Russian or Belarusian special forces are attacking Poland. After the saboteurs are “detained” by Polish special services, according to Russian legend, they will confirm their “affiliation with Moscow” at a press conference — and this will supposedly cause the conflict to escalate.

ISW calls this statement an information operation that creates the background for future real sabotage by Russia. In this way, the Kremlin is trying to:

to avoid responsibility for a potential terrorist attack,

to sow doubts among Ukraine’s allies,

undermine trust in the Ukrainian side and push NATO to make false start decisions.

ISW analysts recall that on September 26, Russia had already spread similar disinformation when it announced “Ukrainian provocations” in the airspace of Poland and Romania, although it was the Russian Federation that was officially blamed for these incidents.

As a reminder, on the evening of September 30 , an unidentified unmanned aerial vehicle was spotted flying near the airport in the Norwegian city of Brønneisund.

As reported, flights of unidentified drones were recorded in Denmark, Sweden, Lithuania, Norway and Finland , some of which flew near military facilities and strategic infrastructure.
