Putin announced the seizure of Ukrainian territory four times its size.

During a meeting with heads of international news agencies, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin stated that the Russian army had allegedly established control over 2,440,000 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory. This figure is almost four times the area of Ukraine as a whole.

The Moscow Times drew attention to the discrepancy.

During his speech, Putin also claimed that Russian troops were allegedly advancing daily in all directions of the front, and were in full control of the Luhansk region and approximately 80% of the territory of the Zaporizhzhia region.

“The Russian army has brought approximately two thousand four hundred and forty thousand square kilometers under its control,” he said.

At the same time, Ukraine’s area within its internationally recognized borders is approximately 603,600 square kilometers. Thus, the figure cited by the Russian president is more than four times the country’s total territory.

The statement was later edited on the Kremlin’s official website. The word “thousands” was removed from the quote, indicating that the territory covered 2,440 square kilometers.
