Russian leader Vladimir Putin celebrated his 74th birthday with former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, who recently took a position in Russian business.

This is reported by DW.

The Kremlin said that Putin learned of Schroeder’s arrival in Moscow from media reports and invited the former chancellor to his home. There they celebrated the Russian leader’s birthday , which falls on October 7 , together .

“The president invited his old friend to his home. Gerhard Schroeder was with Vladimir Putin when the head of state celebrated his birthday yesterday , “ the Kremlin said.

Schroeder arrived in the Russian capital to meet with employees and management of the Globus hypermarket chain . He recently joined the supervisory board of Hyperglobus LLC , the Russian division of the German holding Globus Holding GmbH & Co, which operates a chain of grocery hypermarkets in the Russian Federation.

The former chancellor’s appointment has drawn criticism in Germany. In particular, a number of politicians and economists have spoken out against his new job in Russia. Bundestag member Roderich Kiesewetter called the decision “ a betrayal of Europe and his own country.”

Gerhard Schröder , 82, led the German government from 1998 to 2005 and the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) from 1999 to 2004. For many years , he has been criticized for his close relations with Russia and cooperation with Russian energy companies.

After the start of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine , Schroeder did not distance himself from the Kremlin. In January 2026 , he advocated the resumption of energy cooperation with Russia and called for not demonizing it despite the war against Ukraine.

Earlier it was reported that People’s Deputy Artem Dmytruk, who was elected to the Verkhovna Rada from the “ Servant of the People” party and is now a non-partisan, congratulated Russian President Vladimir Putin on his birthday . In his address, he also called on Ukraine to engage in direct dialogue with Russia and Belarus.
