Putin held talks with the leaders of Finland and Norway: what was discussed

Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre had a telephone conversation with Vladimir Putin on October 27 regarding the end of the war in Ukraine. The talks were held in agreement with the Ukrainian side.

This was reported by the press service of the President of Finland.

The conversation took place in Helsinki and was a continuation of the talks in Oslo on October 20. Stubb and Stere initiated contact to discuss Russia’s war against Ukraine, diplomatic efforts to end it, and European security.

The aim of the talks was to directly convey to Putin positions on the future peace process. The conversation was also related to the planned meetings in Abu Dhabi.

The Finnish President’s Office clarified that Stubb and Stere represented only their countries, not all of Europe .

During the negotiations, the leaders of Finland and Norway emphasized the need to end the war, resume the negotiation process, and continue support for Ukraine.

“The conversation was frank and meaningful. We are neighboring countries with Russia. The outcome of this war will directly affect our security and the security of Europe as a whole. Direct negotiations are necessary to end the war,” Stubb said.

The Prime Minister of Norway also drew attention to the consequences of Russian aggression.

“War has a huge human and material cost. The suffering and destruction will affect future generations. During the conversation, we emphasized the importance of de-escalation,” Stere noted.

Separately, the parties raised the issues of stability and security in the Baltic Sea region and the Far North.

As a reminder, on October 20 , negotiations between Ukraine and the United States took place in Oslo with the participation of the leaders of Finland and Norway . The parties discussed possible ways to end the war and security guarantees for Ukraine.
