Russian President Vladimir Putin may be considering a new war against Europe amid the difficulties of the war in Ukraine. Meanwhile, debate is growing in the United States about the role of NATO and President Donald Trump’s stance in the event of a potential conflict.

This is reported by The Washington Post .

Columnist David Ignatius notes that Putin may feel “backed into a corner” due to the situation on the front in Ukraine, limited opportunities for support from allies, and political changes in Europe.

“If you are Putin and you feel so cornered, you may be starting to think about the next war — against Europe,” the columnist notes.

The article emphasizes that, despite a temporary increase in revenues from high oil prices, the economic situation in Russia remains difficult, while European countries are strengthening their defense capabilities and intensifying cooperation within NATO.

A study by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace states that Russia could become more dangerous to Europe after the war against Ukraine.

“By invading Ukraine under false pretenses, Russia could emerge from the war less secure and more resentful, posing a greater threat to Europe,” the study notes.

Carnegie Endowment Senior Fellow Eugene Rumer said that Europe remains a key direction for Russia.

“I proceed from the deep conviction that Europe is the most important theater of operations for Russia,” he said.

Analysts also pay attention to the losses of the Russian army. According to Michael Kofman, in March Russia lost between 30,000 and 35,000 soldiers killed and wounded, which exceeds the rate of replenishment.

The material notes that in Russia, Ukraine is viewed as a threat because of its desire to integrate into Europe.

“Russia may be ready to use military force against NATO within 5 years,” Alliance Secretary General Mark Rutte previously stated.

Separately, it is reported that the Russian Ministry of Defense has warned of possible strikes on European countries that supply drones to Ukraine, including Germany, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy, and the Netherlands.

The publication also raises the issue of the US response in the event of a possible attack on Europe. It is noted that Trump has repeatedly criticized NATO, which is causing concern among European allies.

“Managing Europe’s relations with Russia will require significant U.S. diplomatic engagement,” the U.S. National Security Strategy states.

Analysts note that the potential weakening of transatlantic unity could create additional security risks in Europe.

It was previously reported that the Russian Federation is moving from open threats to specific subversive actions on the territory of European states . At the same time, the countries of the European Union have encountered serious problems in trying to prepare their territory for a possible defense.

The Russian Defense Ministry recently published a list of companies located in Europe that allegedly produce and supply drones to Ukraine. Such a move, the press service of the ministry claims, will lead to an escalation of the military-political situation on the European continent and the transformation of these countries into Ukraine’s strategic rear.

Recall that the Kremlin is actively forming the psychological and informational basis for a possible future war against NATO. At the same time , Russia is creating a network of “Trojan horses” , buying up real estate near military bases of NATO countries, to launch a coordinated sabotage campaign. The Kremlin has also intensified its propaganda campaign regarding the creation of the “Narva People’s Republic” , which may indicate that the Kremlin is preparing to attack Estonia.
