Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that a meeting between Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky is possible only after all key issues have been previously worked out. At the same time, he questioned the legitimacy of the Ukrainian president and put forward unacceptable conditions for Kyiv regarding security and the presence of foreign troops.
This is reported by Russian media.
The Russian Foreign Ministry has announced new conditions for a possible meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. According to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, such a meeting can only take place if “all issues that require discussion at the highest level are thoroughly worked out.”
Lavrov also referred to the results of the talks in Anchorage between Putin and US President Donald Trump, where, he said, “significant progress” was made in determining the parameters of a possible settlement of the war against Ukraine.
The minister paid special attention to the issue of the legitimacy of the Ukrainian leadership. He stated that if the agreements were to proceed to the stage of signing, “it would be necessary to resolve the issue of the legitimacy of the signatory from Kyiv.” Thus, Russia once again questioned the legitimacy of Volodymyr Zelensky’s tenure as president of Ukraine.
Lavrov called another condition the withdrawal of foreign troops from the territory of Ukraine. According to him, for Moscow the presence of international military contingents is “absolutely unacceptable”, and he characterized the West’s attempts to increase support for Ukraine as “foreign intervention”.
At the same time, the Russian minister stated that the Kremlin recognizes only those security guarantees that were agreed upon in Istanbul back in 2022, calling all other proposals “futile ideas.”
By the way, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk opposed holding talks between President Volodymyr Zelensky and Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin in Hungary.
It was previously reported that a meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian leader Vladimir Putin could take place in the coming weeks . According to European diplomatic sources, Hungary is being considered as a potential venue for the talks.
As a reminder, multilateral talks involving US President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and leaders of key European countries have concluded in Washington. The central topic of the discussions was the prospect of ending the war in Ukraine and launching a new peace process initiated by Washington.
