“Putin is testing the West’s resolve”: EU and NATO comment on Russia’s violation of Estonian airspace
Officials from the European Union and the North Atlantic Alliance have commented on the violation of Estonian airspace by Russian fighter jets.
In particular, the head of European diplomacy, Kaia Kallas, stated that the incident in question is an extremely dangerous provocation by Russia.
She emphasized that this is the third such violation of the airspace of European Union countries in a few days, which is exacerbating the situation in the region.
“I am working closely with the Estonian government. We will continue to support our member states in strengthening their defense with European resources. Putin is testing the resolve of the West. We must not show weakness,” the official noted.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also reacted . According to her, the EU will respond to every provocation and invest in strengthening the eastern flank.
“As threats grow, so will our pressure. I urge EU leaders to swiftly approve our 19th sanctions package,” the official added.
In turn, NATO spokeswoman Alison Hart noted that the airspace violation is an example of Russia’s reckless behavior and the alliance’s ability to respond.
She assured that NATO responded immediately and intercepted the Russian planes.
As a reminder, Estonia stated that three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets flew into its airspace without permission and stayed there for 12 minutes.
