Putin “repeated” World War II only in terms of horror – CNN

Russian dictator Vladimir Putin “was able to repeat” World War II only in terms of the scale of horror, but not in terms of military results.
This is stated in the CNN article.
The author of the publication draws attention to the fact that Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine is approaching a symbolic and gloomy date. The war between Nazi Germany and the USSR lasted 1,418 days – until May 9, 1945. The same number of days of the Russian Federation’s full-scale aggression against Ukraine will expire on January 11, 2026. There are currently no signs of the end of hostilities before this date or immediately after it.
CNN notes that Putin has built a cult of victory in World War II in Russia, the scale of which exceeds even Soviet times, and has effectively rehabilitated the image of Joseph Stalin.
“This inevitably prompts a comparison between the achievements of Stalin’s USSR in World War II and the results of Putin’s Russia in the war against Ukraine,” the material says.
During the 1,418 days of World War II, the USSR not only repelled the attack of the most powerful army of the time, but also completely defeated it, reaching Berlin and occupying a significant part of Europe.
In contrast, Russia’s military gains in the war against Ukraine look much more modest. Before the start of the full-scale invasion, the Russian Federation controlled about 7% of Ukrainian territory. After the first months of the offensive, the Russian army lost most of the captured lands. As of the end of 2022, Russia controlled about 19% of Ukraine, and after another three years of war – about 20%.
As CNN emphasizes, this additional 13% of territory cost Russia more than a million killed and wounded soldiers. At the same time, the Kremlin failed to break Ukrainian statehood, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky remains in power.
Despite this, Putin continues to insist that time is on Russia’s side, and demands that even those Ukrainian territories that are not under the control of his army be transferred to the Russian Federation.
“This bloodthirstiness appears to be a negotiating strategy,” CNN notes, adding that Putin is counting on US President Donald Trump’s desire to reach an agreement on Ukraine as soon as possible.
The publication also draws attention to the weakening of Western unity in support of Ukraine and the fact that, despite economic losses, Putin’s power within Russia remains stable.
“The growth of military cemeteries, the lack of real political opposition, and the passivity of society allow Putin to continue waging war,” CNN concludes.
It was previously reported that the Kremlin is putting forward conditions for ending the war against Ukraine that go far beyond territorial issues.
