Seven US senators from the Republican and Democratic parties have said that President Donald Trump’s decision to allow the import of Russian diesel fuel into the US violates federal law and should be overturned.

This is stated in a joint statement of senators released by the US Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs.

The document was signed by Gene Shagin, Susan Collins, Richard Blumenthal, Lisa Murkowski, Ron Wyden, Tom Tillis and John Curtis.

The senators recalled that in 2022, Congress directly banned the import of Russian energy resources to the United States so that American funds would not finance Russia’s war against Ukraine.

According to them, Trump’s decision to allow the supply of Russian diesel to the United States “directly contradicts” this law.

The senators also stated that the administration failed to consult with Congress and failed to provide the statutory explanation for its decision.

“The United States should not provide Putin with a financial lifeline while Russia continues to kill Ukrainian civilians. The administration must change course immediately,” the statement said.

Reuters also reports that the authors of the appeal include four Republicans and three Democrats. They demand that Trump abandon the agreement with Russia.

Separately, Republican Senator Tom Tillis stated that there are serious grounds to believe that the implementation of the agreement may be contrary to American law.
