Russian dictator Vladimir Putin has signed a new law significantly expanding the Kremlin’s authority to deploy Russian troops beyond the country’s borders.
This is reported by The Moscow Times.
The new document allows the use of Russian troops abroad under the pretext of “protecting Russian citizens.”
In particular, the law provides for the possibility of using the army in cases where Russians outside the country are allegedly “persecuted,” “detained,” or arrested.
The document also mentions decisions of international courts and bodies that Russia does not recognize.
Corresponding amendments were made to the laws “On Citizenship” and “On Defense.”
Before signing, the law was approved by the State Duma and the Federation Council of the Russian Federation.
The Moscow Times notes that the new regulations further expand the Kremlin’s ability to use military force outside the country.
