In the Odessa region, a heightened alert regime has been introduced due to the threat of a new bout of bad weather. Forecasters predict a significant deterioration in the weather. Heavy rains are expected from October 7 to 9, with thunderstorms, squalls and the risk of flooding in places. The first, yellow, level of danger has been declared in the region.
This was reported by the head of the Odessa OVA, Oleg Kiper.
According to him, municipal services have already been warned and put on high alert. Authorities are urging residents to be careful, avoid staying under trees and billboards, and in case of strong winds, not to leave cars near old buildings.
Kiper also added that educational institutions are considering the possibility of moving to a distance learning format on October 7. Businesses are advised to prepare for the same scenario if the weather deteriorates sharply.
Odessa Mayor Gennady Trukhanov also reported that the Hydrometeorological Center of the Black and Azov Seas has issued a warning of dangerous meteorological phenomena of the first (yellow) level. According to him, significant rain is expected on the night of October 7 – from 15 to 49 mm of precipitation within 12 hours, which may lead to new flooding in low-lying areas of the city.
During the day, Odessa municipal enterprises prepared for worsening weather conditions. In particular, the Municipal Enterprise “City Roads” is cleaning drainage systems, rain gutters and trays from debris and leaves, as well as flushing pipes for quick drainage of rainwater. The work is being carried out both manually and with the help of heavy special equipment.
Due to the predicted bad weather, classes in schools, kindergartens, and after-school institutions will be held remotely on October 7 – the relevant decision was made according to a letter from the Odessa Regional Military Administration.
Odessa is still recovering from the recent disaster. On September 30, the city was literally drowned in rainwater . Two months’ worth of precipitation fell in seven hours. The downpours paralyzed transport, flooded dozens of houses, and damaged infrastructure. The city has declared a red alert.
The consequences were catastrophic. Ten people died, many Odessans were injured. President Volodymyr Zelensky ordered a large-scale inspection after the disaster, and Deputy Prime Minister for the Restoration of Ukraine Oleksiy Kuleba arrived in the city, who is preparing a government report. According to him, personnel decisions are not excluded.
As a reminder, Odessa Mayor Gennady Trukhanov warned of a new threat of large-scale flooding in the city and convened a commission on technogenic and environmental safety and emergencies to assess the risks. According to experts, the greatest danger of flooding is for the coastal zone from Kryzhanivka to Chornomorka, as well as for the territories stretching inland from the center to the village of Avangard.
It is worth adding that the downpour in Odessa was caused by a local cyclone over the Black Sea , whose movement to the north and east was blocked by an anticyclone. This led to the intensification of atmospheric fronts and record rainfall.
