The European Union has halted the ratification process of a trade agreement with the United States amid statements by US President Donald Trump about the seizure of Greenland.

This was reported by Le Figaro.

According to the leader of the Social Democrats (S&D) group, Iratxe Garcia Perez, there are “more people in the European Parliament who agree” with the relevant decision than those who did not support it.

“This is an extremely powerful lever. I don’t believe companies are ready to abandon the European market,” said Valerie Guyer, president of the centrist group Renew.

At the same time, some politicians do not support such an EU decision, calling it a “mistake.”

Trump previously imposed tariffs on imports from eight European countries over their stance on Greenland . The tariffs will remain in effect until a deal is reached to fully purchase the island, and will rise to 25% on June 1.

Recall that Trump declared the strategic importance of Greenland for the security of the United States, and the goal of annexing the island to the United States has moved from rhetoric to official policy of the country, as the White House has begun implementing an official plan to acquire it from Denmark .

At the same time, the Prime Minister of Denmark appealed to Trump to stop statements about the possible seizure of Greenland . She emphasized that talk of annexation of Greenland is baseless.

As is known, against the backdrop of US President Donald Trump’s statements regarding the seizure of Greenland , the Danish authorities are sending military equipment and defense forces to the island .
