Multilateral talks involving US President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and leaders of key European countries have concluded in Washington. The central topic of discussion was the prospect of ending the war in Ukraine and launching a new peace process initiated by Washington.

Trump’s new diplomatic initiative: a summit with the participation of Putin and Zelensky is being prepared

According to Donald Trump, preparations for a historic meeting between Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin will begin in the near future. The American leader personally contacted the Kremlin after the talks at the White House.

“After a series of constructive meetings with Zelensky, Macron, Mertz, Starmer and other leaders, I had a phone call with Putin and began arranging a personal meeting between him and Zelensky. Location still to be agreed,” Trump said on the Truth Social social network.

Moreover, after the bilateral meeting between the leaders of Ukraine and Russia, a trilateral summit is planned – with the participation of Zelensky, Putin, and Trump himself.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz clarified that the first stage of negotiations could take place within the next two weeks.

The Ukrainian president said that the issue of the occupied territories was discussed in a frank conversation with American and European partners. During the meeting at the White House, the parties compared maps with the real state of the front, provided by both the Ukrainian and American sides.

“I showed the American allies exactly which part of our land is temporarily occupied and who controls the situation at the front. This is not just a discussion about numbers – it’s about the real strength of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the real scale of advancement,” Zelensky told reporters.

The President emphasized that the conversation with Putin regarding the territories will be personal and will not include any preconditions: “We have to meet and talk directly. If we start making demands in advance, we will receive hundreds of conditions in response. Therefore, no conditions, just a conversation between leaders.”

Security guarantees for Ukraine

A separate part of the talks was devoted to issues of long-term security for Ukraine. Zelensky announced that in the near future — within 7–10 working days — a package of documents formalizing guarantees from Western partners will be signed.

These guarantees have three main components:

Army financing
This is about providing the Armed Forces of Ukraine not only with equipment, but also with stable financial support – for salaries, logistics, and maintaining defense capabilities.

US military aid
Ukraine has already submitted a package of proposals covering support worth about $90 billion, including the supply of aircraft and air defense systems.

Development of the drone industry
Ukrainian drones are to become part of the future defense potential. The US has agreed to purchase these drones, which will allow for the development of domestic production.

Trump’s security formula: “analogous to NATO’s Article 5”

The US President also confirmed the readiness of the allies to provide Ukraine with guarantees that will operate on a principle similar to Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty. However, this is not about joining NATO, but about a separate system of guarantees that will be activated only after the signing of a peace agreement with the Russian Federation.

A meeting without unacceptable compromises

According to Zelensky, no unacceptable proposals or ultimatums were made during the negotiations at the White House. All parties had a meaningful dialogue, where the arguments of each participant were taken into account.

“I defended every percent of Ukrainian territory, argued for every square kilometer. It is important that partners see the real picture – who controls what, and with what efforts,” he noted.

As a reminder, on Monday, August 18, a meeting between US leader Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, and European leaders began in Washington.
