Israel and the Hamas group have agreed to end the war in the Gaza Strip and release hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners.
Reuters reports this.
The document became the first stage of the so-called “Donald Trump plan,” aimed at ending the conflict that has claimed the lives of more than 67,000 Palestinians and profoundly changed the security situation in the Middle East.
Under the terms of the agreement, hostilities are to cease, Israel will partially withdraw troops from Gaza, and Hamas will release all hostages in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.
“The United States guaranteed the end of the war,” said exiled Hamas leader Khalil al-Hayya.
After the Israeli government ratifies the document, the ceasefire will take effect within 24 hours, and all hostages are planned to be released within 72 hours.
The deal will allow dozens of trucks of humanitarian aid, including food and medicine, to enter the Gaza Strip to support hundreds of thousands of civilians displaced by the massive shelling. US President Donald Trump said he believed the deal would “pave the way for lasting peace.”
The agreement also provides for further negotiations within the framework of the 20-point plan, in particular on the future governance of Gaza and the disarmament of Hamas.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the agreement a “diplomatic success and a moral victory for Israel.” At the same time, far-right members of his coalition have expressed dissatisfaction with the document and insist on the complete destruction of Hamas after the return of the hostages.
Despite the still-unagreed list of Palestinians for exchange, news of the ceasefire sparked a wave of joy in Gaza and Israel.
“Thank God for stopping the bloodshed. The entire Gaza Strip is happy, the entire Arab community and the entire world are happy for the end of the war,” said Khan Yunis resident Abdul Majid Abd Rabbo.
Trump plans to visit the region in the near future to participate in the signing ceremony in Egypt and address the Israeli Knesset.
As a reminder, US President Donald Trump announced that Hamas militants should release all hostages by the beginning of next week . After that, a final agreement is planned to be signed in Egypt, which will determine the future of the Gaza Strip.
Earlier, Trump announced that Israel and the Hamas group had reached an agreement on the implementation of the first phase of the peace plan , which concerns the Gaza Strip.
