Romania began importing electricity from Ukraine via Moldova

Romanian state-owned company Nuclearelectrica has started purchasing electricity from Ukraine. The supply was organized with the participation of the Moldovan company Energocom to compensate for the capacity deficit after the shutdown of one of the power units of the Chernavode nuclear power plant.

This is stated in a statement by the Nuclearelectrica company.

The company explained that the decision was made after the first power unit of the Cernavode nuclear power plant was taken out for repairs. Thanks to electricity imports, Romania plans to stabilize the situation on the domestic energy market and avoid a deficit.

Nuclearelectrica emphasized that the deliveries are carried out in cooperation with the Moldovan company Energocom. The basis for this cooperation was a memorandum of understanding, which the parties concluded back in 2023.

The company noted that the current cooperation is a continuation of the partnership between the countries in the field of energy security. They recalled that previously Romania supported the energy system of Moldova, and now Energocom helps ensure the stability of Romania’s energy supply.

Nuclearelectrica emphasized that such interaction demonstrates the importance of regional cooperation and mutual support in the face of challenges for the energy sector.
