Romania wants to discuss with Ukraine additional security measures for naval drones used in the Black Sea. Bucharest proposes to configure the drones in such a way that in case of loss of communication or control, they cannot enter the country’s territorial waters.

This was stated by Romanian Defense Minister Radu Miruce in an interview with TVR Info.

According to him, modern maritime drones contain a large amount of electronics that allow their location to be tracked. That is why, according to the Romanian side, it is necessary to provide a mechanism that will prevent unmanned devices from entering the waters of neighboring states.

“If a drone is lost in the Black Sea and it approaches Romanian territorial waters, the operator should program it to automatically self-destruct,” Miruce said.

Bucharest believes that this approach will help avoid potential security risks and eliminate the need for search operations in the event of a drone being lost.

Romania is one of the NATO countries that borders Ukraine across the Black Sea, so the issue of security in the region remains one of its priorities against the backdrop of the ongoing war.

As a reminder, on the morning of June 5 , an explosion occurred near the headquarters of the Maritime Safety Agency in the strategic port of Constanta, Romania. According to preliminary data, a naval drone detonated.

As reported, one of the unmanned sea boats of the Ukrainian Navy while performing tasks in the Black Sea operational zone lost control due to the influence of Russian electronic warfare equipment and ended up near the coast of Romania.
