Romanian President Nicos Dan said that the country would not participate in closing airspace over Ukraine, as such a step could mean Bucharest’s direct involvement in a military conflict.
This is reported by Agerpres .
Dan held consultations with representatives of the state apparatus, the military, advisors and foreign policy experts. Following the discussions, it was decided that at this stage Romania would not join the initiative to close the skies over Ukraine.
“At the moment, probably not,” emphasized Nikushor Dan, answering journalists’ questions about the prospects for such participation.
At the same time, he clarified that the position may be revised in the future if the international situation changes. The President emphasized that the decision is based on an analysis of international norms and practices that define the line between assisting a country in a state of war and actual entry into the conflict.
“There are international customs regarding what it means to be in conflict or not. And on this issue, according to some interpretations of the majority, doing so means in a certain way entering into conflict,” the Romanian leader explained.
Earlier, the American Institute for the Study of War reported that on the night of September 13, a Russian drone violated Romanian airspace, forcing the NATO member country to scramble F-16 fighter jets. Such incidents are not accidental and Russia is deliberately testing the Alliance’s response.
By the way, Romanian Defense Minister Ionut Moșteanu said that Russian drones cross the country’s airspace almost every week.
As a reminder, during the Russian air attack on Ukraine , a Russian drone violated Romanian airspace and flew into the country’s territory.
As it became known, the Russian drone was in Romanian airspace for about 50 minutes and descended to a distance of 10 kilometers.
